Online pass for TWO - Meet 3 Californian New Wave Winemakers
What is Counoise? Ever tried a still, red wine made from just Pinot Meunier? Or a Californian Grenache Blanc?
There's a New Wave of young Californian winemakers rising up through the ranks, each of them pushing at the envelope to create fresh and unexpected wines.
For this event we will meet and talk to THREE wine pioneers while tasting one wine from each (all made in small batches, so this is a truly limited opportunity).
Evan Frazier of Ferdinand Wines, Lodi
Evan works as Assistant Winemaker at Kongsgaard, one of the finest wine producers in California. Through his own project Ferdinand Wines, Evan wants to express a passion for Spanish grapes (reflecting his career start in Catalan country where he could be found up to his elbows in old vines and steep schist slopes).
We'll try Evan's Lodi Garnacha Blanca, which has garnered plenty of accolades such as: "As tasty as its Catalan counterpart can be, with herby and savoury demeanour complemented by plenty of Californian sunshine."
Jack Roberts and Johanna Jensen of Keep Wines, Napa
Husband and wife team Jack and Johanna (JJ) both cut their teeth in Napa Valley working and learning alongside winemakers committed to sustainable farming and low intervention winemaking. For their own project Keep Wines they now seek interesting cultivars from local organic growers.
The couple source their Pinot Meunier fruit from the famous Yount Mill vineyard in Oakville, most of which is really intended for sparkling wine. They fashion from it a unqiue still red wine that simply must be experienced.
Matt Nagy of Benevolent Neglect, North Coast
Matt previously worked for Maybach Cellars, a famous winemaking family and while there he produced no less than eleven wines garnering a perfect 100 points from influential wine critic Robert Parker.
Usually seen as one of the lesser known grapes authorised for use in Chateauneuf du Pape, Counoise was introduced to California by the famous Rhone winemakers the Perrin family. Matt has sourced hand-harvested fruit from two vineyards - half from a young site northwest of Napa that was planted as a joint effort by Benevolent Neglect and Keep Wines, and half from a more established site in Mendocino.
