FRANCE v NEW WORLD - Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot
An evening focusing on some of the world's best loved grape varieties!
We will taste wines from Bordeaux, a classic region in France for red wines made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and white wines made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. We will compare these with wines from New World regions like Argentina, California and New Zealand made using the same grapes!
Whether you think you generally prefer Old World or New World wines, you may be surprised! We will taste some wines 'blind' (with the bottles covered to make the comparison fair) and then see if we can discover clues in the flavours and aromas of the wine that give the country of origin away! No previous wine tasting experience required - just come and join in the fun and develop your tasting skills.
Bordeaux in France produces some great white wines made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc and some of the world's best blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, especially in recent very ripe vintages, but regions like Argentina, California and New Zealand are at last catching up. Which do you prefer? After each comparison we will vote for the best before all is revealed - like our own Judgement of Paris! *
(*In 1976 the Judgement of Paris was organised by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier and later became famous as the tasting that changed the world. Steven organised a panel of French wine experts to 'blind' taste an array of French wines against Californian equivalents. The judges were themselves shocked to find how many Californian wines scored top marks).
