Meet the Winemaker: Franciacorta

Meet the Winemaker: Franciacorta

Join us for a fabulous evening tasting 8 different wines made by boutique producer Barboglio de Gaioncelli and come meet the winemaker! This producer enjoys a strong reputation in the Franciacorta region so it's great to have them guide us through their wines.

We will begin by sampling a still white blend and a still Pinot Noir before moving onto their full range of 6 Franciacorta sparkling wines (see range and prices below)). So lots of lovely wine to try and we'll also point you to the local retailer exclusively importing these wines into the UK and Cambridge restaurants stocking them.

What is Franciacorta?

Italy doesn't just make Prosecco, there is also lovely Franciacorta - a sparkling wine made using the traditional method and a rival to Champagne!

Why have I never heard of it?

Compared to Champagne, the production of sparkling wine in Franciacorta is relatively recent. Winemakers in the region (near Lake Iseo) were focused on making still wines from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. But in the 1960s one producer experimented making traditional method sparkling wine and it took off! The perfect local geography moderated by the nearby lake combined with stringent quality standards imposed by a consortium of local growers ensures demand now far outstrips other wines of the region.

What does Franciacorta taste like?

It's aged for a long time on the lees like Champagne so you definitely get those same bready, biscuity flavours. But Franciacorta enjoys warmer weather so you can experiment with things like 'zero dosage' more easily. Other than that much depends on the vineyards, how long the wine has aged and the style of the producer. Barboglio de Gaioncelli age their wines for far longer than the minimally specified period, they hand harvest, manually remuage and more! Come and give them a try!

Who are Barboglio de Gaioncelli?

Winemaker Andrea and chef friend Lorenzo combine their talents to create a destination winery in the Franciacorta region. Choosing an estate established in 1875, the two friends now each look after a side of the business: the 30 hectares of vineyards making 30,000 bottles a year and the quality restaurant ranking among Italy's Top 100 places to eat! Almost half of the wine Andrea makes under his own label is consumed in the restaurant and much of the rest goes to the local Italian market and Germany. So whatever you can get in the UK is in limited supply!

Which wines will we sample?

Two still wines will be tasted so we can understand the base wines they use and then 6 Franciacorta wines:

  • Curtefranca Bianco DOC (£15)
  • IGT Sebino Pinot Noir (£15)
  • Franciacorta Brut aged 30 months (£28)
  • Franciacorta Extra Dry aged 30 months (£28)
  • Franciacorta Rosé aged 64 months (£38)
  • Vintage Franciacorta Extra Brut aged 36 months (£37)
  • Vintage Franciacorta Satèn Brut aged 36 months (£33)
  • Vintage Franciacorta Zero Dosage aged 72 months (£47). This one alone is more than the ticket price!

By the end of the evening you will have fallen in love with the estate and you'll be seeking more Franciacorta!
