Meet the Winemaker - Cecchetto from Italy
A terrific opportunity to meet the winemarker, hear the stories and discover a new grape variety - Raboso!
It's always wonderful to hear from a winemaker direct, especially when the wines they make are actually available to buy in Cambridge. Join us in collaboration with local Italian import specialists Vine & Cork for an exclusive tasting arranged just for Cambridgeshire Wine School and meet leading Treviso producer Cecchetto from Italy.
Estate winemaker Marco and Sara (daughter of owner Giorgio Cecchetto) are flying over to Cambridge especially from Treviso to be on hand to guide us through a tasting of 7 wines from the Cecchetto estate!
Some of the wines we will be trying reflect Cecchetto's top passion - rescuing, protecting and promoting wine made from the historic Raboso grape.
Raboso is high in tannin and acidity, which means it was perfect for Venetian traders to send to other countries in the 16th and 17th centuries (the tannins and acidity protected the wine during transport). In modern times, however, Raboso has been overlooked in favour of more popular international varieties such as Merlot.
This is a trend that has now changed for the better ever since Giorgio Cecchetto began planting new clones and using improved vineyard techniques and harvesting methods to soften Raboso and bring out more of its alluring flavours and charm. He even formed a local fraternity organisation of Raboso producers. He is noted by Jancis Robinson for being a top producer getting the best out of this grape.
Along with other wines the estate makes, we'll sample a Raboso red, a traditional vintage sparkling rosé Raboso, an award-winning Raboso made Amarone-style from partially dried grapes and a dessert Raboso too.
Born and raised in a family of vine growers and winemakers, Georgio Cecchetto began to focus on Raboso in 1986 seeing it as part of the heritage of the land to be protected for future generations.
"I’ve always been convinced that such a wild horse, however hard to tame, had great potential," he says. "In the late 1990’s I started to dehydrate part of the grapes in order to smooth them and I made different versions of the wine, ageing it in barrels made of different woods from local trees."
Join us for this once in a lifetime to chance to try something new - a unique taste of Italy.
