Champagne & Sparkling Wine (plus Fish & Chips)
Come enjoy a decadent evening exploring 6 different types of sparkling wine with a fish & chip supper (£13 paid separately) - a chance to try a most spectacular food and wine pairing (see below for details)!
For many people the glass of fizz at the start of the meal is among the most enjoyable drink of the evening. These wines are crafted by the wine maker and the processes involved in making the sparkle is key. We will try different Champagne look-a-likes from around the world (e.g. Cava, Prosecco) and compare Champagne with English Sparkling Wine!
We will learn about the historical method that gives us the most beautiful bubbly and look at the terms on the labels (e.g. 'NV', 'Brut' and 'Blanc de Blanc') and what these actually tell us about the wine inside the bottle. But the world of sparkling wine is far more diverse than Champagne alone - we will also examine other wines made in the same way and ask 'are they as good?'
Our venue for the evening is the Atrium Brasserie within Gonville Hotel. Our food will be made under supervision of renowned chef Hans Schweitzer from popular fine dining restaurant Cotto.
(Ever since Cotto re-opened at the Gonville Hotel in 2017 Hans and his team have been looking after the kitchens for both restaurants).
Soon after our evening starts the staff will bring in your pre-ordered plate of fish and chips (or vegetarian alternative). Experience Champagne with deep fried food - it is a classic food and wine pairing that simply must be tried! You will sample it with at least 3 wines and at the end you can vote for the best match.

- Battered haddock with chips and peas and chunky tartare sauce (£13)
- Battered cod with chips and peas and chunky tartare sauce (£13)
- Vegetarian: butternut squash and sweet potato burger with Red Leicester and chips (£13)
Note - if you are wheat free you can request not to have your food battered. Let us know about any other dietary request.
This evening can be booked on its own or as part of our core 8-week course - book all 8 evenings and save 15%! The 8-week course is flexible, so if you have to skip an evening you can pick it up next time.
All tastings include; minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, tasting sheet and use of professional tasting glasses.
