FRANCE v NEW WORLD - Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc & Riesling
An evening focusing on popular white wines!
We will taste wines from Loire and Alsace, classic regions in France for wines made with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chenin Blanc. We will compare these with wines from New World regions like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa made using the same grapes!
Whether you think you generally prefer Old World or New World wines, you may be surprised! We will taste some wines 'blind' (with the bottles covered to make the comparison fair) and then see if we can discover clues in the flavours and aromas of the wine that give the country of origin away! No previous wine tasting experience required - just come and join in the fun and develop your tasting skills.
The Loire valley in France produces some of the world's best Sauvignon Blanc & Chenin Blanc, but regions like South Africa is catching up. Similarly Alsace produces some very nice Riesling & Pinot Gris but you may find you prefer Riesling from Australia or New Zealand. After each comparison we will vote for the best before all is revealed - like our own Judgement of Paris! *
(*In 1976 the Judgement of Paris was organised by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier and later became famous as the tasting that changed the world. Steven organised a panel of French wine experts to 'blind' taste an array of French wines against Californian equivalents. The judges were themselves shocked to find how many Californian wines scored top marks).
